The root of the teak tree is a waste product from the certified teak plantations in Java, Indonesia. When the roots have to be dug up to plant new teak trees, the teak root is usually considered waste. If teak roots are not discarded, they can be made into durable furniture, home accessories and kitchen utensils that keep trees from being felled.
Local villagers collect and clean the roots while artisans carve them into various shaped home accessories. They use traditional tools for the production process.
